Basics of Roulette Bets

It’s a good idea to go over the basics of roulette odds. Virtually all bets on the roulette table have the same house edge, which is approximately 2.70% on a European roulette table and about 5.26% in American roulette. All bets below can be assumed to have those house edges unless otherwise noted.

Six-Line: This is two street bets rolled into one and is worth 5:1. Top-Line Bet: This is a bet that’s exclusive to American roulette. To make this bet, place a chip on the line the runs through the middle of 0, 00 and 1, 2, 3. A successful top-line bet is worth 6:1. Roulette Betting Options: Outside Bets. The line bets found within a good game of casino online roulette happens to be quite similar to that of ‘street bets’ within the roulette gameplay system, where the bet would be placed on any number with a 3 number row; however, in the case of a line bet during roulette gameplay, the difference lies in the fact that instead of placing the. The best bet in roulette is on a European roulette table which offers the en prison option. This reduces the house edge by half again, making it only 1.35%. Here’s how it works: On a European roulette game with the en prison rule in effect, your even money bet becomes “imprisoned” when the ball lands on the zero. 5) is a bet on 6 numbers touching the selected line. There may be bets on 5 numbers as well if placed on a line at 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, and four numbers if it is European. The standard 6 number line allows you to win at 5:1 ratio and the probability of a victory is 6 out of 38/37. Odds – Roulette Outside bets.

Most roulette bets can be divided into two broad categories; these are inside bets and outside bets. When making these bets during a game you’ll need to meet the table minimum on each outside bet you make, and the combined total of all of your inside bets must also meet the table minimum.

You may make inside bets, outside bets, or a combination of both, as long as the bets you choose to make meet the minimum betting rules.

Inside Bets on the Roulette Wheel Explained

The video above specifically deals with inside bets. It explains the six different kinds of inside bets and demonstrates how to make them.

Generally speaking, inside bets are those roulette bets that are made on single numbers or a few numbers at a time. They derive their name from the fact that they are made on the inside of the roulette table’s layout, where the numbers are listed.

The following inside bets are available:

Single Number Bets (also known as Straight-up Bets or Classic Bets): Players may wager on any individual number by placing chips on top of that number. If the number is hit on the next spin, this wager pays 35-1.

Split Bets: This bet is made on any two numbers that are adjacent on the roulette board, and can be made by placing chips on the line between those two numbers. If either number is the winner on the next spin, this bet pays 17-1.

Street Bets: This bet is made on any row of three numbers on the roulette table, and can be made by placing your chips on the edge of that row. If any of those three numbers win, the bet pays 11-1.

Corner Bets or Square Bets: This bet is made on a square of four numbers on the roulette board, and can be made by placing chips on the point shared by those four numbers. If any of the four numbers win, this bet pays 8-1.

Six Line Bet: This bet is made on two adjacent lines of three numbers each, for a total of six numbers. This bet is made by placing chips at the intersection between the two lines along the side of the board. If any of those six numbers win, the bet pays 5-1.

Top Line Bet: One additional bet is available to players in American roulette. This bet can be made on the five numbers 0-00-1-2-3. This bet pays 6-1; however, it is the only bet with a higher than normal house edge (7.9%), and should probably be avoided during play.

The second broad category of bets in roulette is known as outside bets, which are focused away from the individual numbers on the board. The video above demonstrates how and where to place your chips when making each of these five different outside bets available at the roulette table.

Outside bets are less risky than inside bets, but also come with lower payouts. These wagers can be found on the “outside” of the roulette board, around the area where the numbers are listed. Outside bets available to players are as follows:

Column Bets: This bet covers one of the three columns of 12 numbers found on the roulette wheel. If any number in that column wins, the bet pays 2-1.

Dozens Bets: These bets cover one of three groups of 12 numbers (1-12, 13-24, and 25-36). If any number in that range wins, the bet pays 2-1.

Odd/Even Bets: These two bets cover all odd numbers or even numbers respectively. If any number of that type wins, this bet will pay even money.

Red/Black Bets: These two bets cover all numbers that have pockets of the appropriate color on the roulette wheel. If any number of that color wins, the bet pays even money.

1-18/19-36: These two bets cover all numbers in the ranges suggested by their names. If any number in that range should win, the bet pays even money.

French Bets in Roulette

Along with the standard roulette bets you’ll also sometimes hear of “French Bets”, special betting options that cover certain sections of the wheel. These bets are generally offered only on certain European roulette tables, particularly those that are actually found in Europe (or at online casinos that cater to the European market).

These bets include voisins du zéro (neighbors of zero, 17 numbers that are near the zero on the wheel), jeu zéro (zero game, for the seven numbers closest to zero), and le tiers du cylindre (thirds of the wheel, or those 12 numbers that are on the opposite side of the wheel from the zero).

The 6 Line Bet or Transversale Simple is an Inside Bet like the Single Number Bet or the Corner Bet (Square Bet). It’s got nothing to do with the number 6 (although a 6 line bet can cover this black number). They are called Inside Bets, because of the layout of a roulette betting table. They all lie inside the main betting area (as opposed to outside bets like dozens and columns that lie (yes, you guessed it), outside! This bet is used in a number of roulette staregies like the Shotwell System. If you like this bet, you should also take a look at the Six Line Quattro roulette system which plays 4 of these bets.

This bet is made on two lines of three numbers each that lie next to each other: a total of six numbers. This bet is made by putting your chips on the intersection between the two lines along the side of the betting area. If any of these numbers hit, the the pay off is 5-1.

For example, above, we have 4 Six Line Bets above, covering 64.8% of the table (the same as 2 colums or 2 dozens. Don’t confuse the 6 line bet with the Five Number Bet, which has the worst odds on the table. The 6 Line is a totally different animal.

Win Probability

If you place one 6 line bet on European Roulette, you have a 6:37 chance of winning (16.2%). 1 in 6.2 in other words.
If you play American Roulette, your odds are 6:38 for each 6 number bet or 15.8%. 1 in 6.3 is another way of putting it.

House Edge

The House Edge on this bet is 5.26% for American Roulette (2 zero pockets) and 2.63% in European Roulette.

Roulette Strategies that Use the Six Line Bet

Roulette Top Line Bet

There are lots of strategies that use the six number bet. The simplest one, is a way of getting a bit of variation on the even money bets, which many systems like the Martingale and the Guetting Progression use. Instead of playing red/black, odd/even etc, you cover 50% of the table using 3 out of the 6 available 6 line bets. You can either overap them to reduce your table coverage, or play exclusive 6 line bets (that don’t overlap) to get the full 50% coverage. Sometime we like to cover the table this way, as it allows you to vary your coverage bet by bet. It doesn’t improve your odds (still the same house edge and chance of winning), but it does “randomize” your play.

Roulette Top Line Bet Winners

You can also just bet on 2 six-liners to cover the same as a column or dozen, of course. This allows you to vary some of the systems that use these bets like the Law of The Third for example. If you want to mix it up even more, use Street Bets which is a bet on one row os 3 numbers, rather than 2 rows.
